Rio Hondo competition for 2016 kicked off at Lacy Park on a perfect fall day for running. In the first race of the afternoon, South Pasadena dominated the JV Boys race with a perfect 15 point score and eight runners in the top 10. The Tigers’ Wayne Monical won the race by over half a minute in 17:25 even though he passed the entrance back into the park and had to double back.
The JV Girls ran next, and South Pasadena again won the team competition with 26 points, followed by Temple City with 47. Quyen Ballagh of South Pas won the race in 21:49, followed closely by La Canada’s Sydney Bond at 21:51.
The Varsity Boys toed the start line next, with South Pas senior Kieran Press-Reynolds winning by over 20 seconds in 15:39. Teammate Oliver Chang, Monrovia’s Roberto Soto, and San Marino’s Eric Lew battled for the 2-4 spots, coming through in 16:09, 16:10 and 16:13, respectively. The Tigers easily won the team competition with 25 points to second place La Canada’s 59. Temple City tied with San Marino on points, but took 3rd based on their 6th runner’s placing.
Next up were the Varsity Girls and there was a great battle for the top three spots between Adena Dipaolo and Sarah Arthur of La Canada and Olivia Ruiz of San Marino. Dipaolo won in 18:57, followed by Ruiz at 19:00 and Arthur at 19:01. La Canada had four runners in the top 10 and won the team competition with 25 points even without Katie Scoville running. South Pas grabbed second place and San Marino third.
Finishing out the meet were the Frosh-Soph Boys -- and, again, South Pasadena’s depth was on display with the young Tiger guys dominating the race and scoring 18 points to win (they had 7 of the top 10 spots). Tiger Sam Clark won the race in 17:09, and he seems to have a shot at Varsity at League 2. His teammates Kai Dettman and Nicolo Porcu came through next at 17:20 and 17:24, respectively. Temple City and La Canada tied on points with 70, and the Rams took second based on their 6th runner.
