Rio Hondo CIF-Southern Section Prelims qualifiers competed all over southern California on May 13. Temple City was at D-2 competition in Moorpark; La Canada, Monrovia, San Marino and South Pasadena were at the D-3 meet at blustery Estancia HS in Costa Mesa; and Blair traveled all the way to Carpinteria. Seven individuals and one relay team qualified to compete in CIF-SS Finals at Cerritos College on May 20 (all are from Division 3 schools): La Canada’s Claire Murray had the fastest time of the day in the girls 100M Hurdles, a PR of 14.60 (wind aided at 3.2 meters/second). Monrovia’s Michael Washington had the 7th fastest time in the 100M dash, with a PR of 10.58 (also wind aided, at 4.1 meters/second). San Marino’s Chuma Azinge had the 3rd best mark of the day in the boys triple jump, a PR of 44’ 4.5” into a 2.8 meters/second headwind. Fellow Titan Olivia Ruiz proceeded to Finals with a time of 2:22.31 in the girls 800M run. The Lady Tigers of South Pasadena had a good outing, with Gianna Beasley qualifying in the girls 800M run in a time of 2:22.36 and 400M with a 58.60 (but, she scratched the 400M to focus on the 800M in Finals), Christina Taylor running a 57.97 to qualify in the girls 400M, and Cate Latting flying over the 100M Hurdles in a personal best 15.70 (wind aided). The Tigers also qualified in the 4x400M Relay, with Beasley and Taylor combining with Segal and Hugasian for a 6th place time of 3:58.82 in challenging conditions. South Pas’ Tianhao Wei had a PR of 43’ 2” in the boys triple jump to qualify for finals.
Other athletes had personal best performances, but did not qualify to move forward to Finals: Monrovia’s Shanihh Bland a 12.97 PR, and South Pasadena’s Lauren Guevara a 13.03 PR in the girls 100M dash (both wind-aided). South Pasadena’s Christina Taylor (25.62) and Cayley Whitman (26.70) PRs in the 200M dash (wind aided). La Canada’s Sarah Auther a PR of 11:44.05 in the 3200M, and Tiger Ashley Hugasian a PR of 46.66 in the 300M Hurdles. On the guys side, Anson Kwan of San Marino had a personal best of 12’ 3” and Tiger Josh Ng had a PR 11’ 9” in the boys Pole Vault. Temple City’s Samuel Jackimowicz had a wind-aided PR of 11.60 in the 100M at D-2 prelims. South Pasadena’s Kai Dettman had a PR 2:00.55 in the 800M.
