Rio Hondo League XC Finals
November 2, 2017 @ Lacy Park

Rio Hondo League XC Finals were held at Lacy Park, with the Varsity squads competing for both League titles and spots in CIF competition.  In the Varsity Boys race, South Pasadena’s Oliver Chang won in 16:03, gapping the rest of the field in the process.  Chang was followed by Monrovia’s Roberto Soto (16:22), Tiger Sophomore Sam Clark (16:25), La Canada’s Ryan Van Slooten (16:29), and Tiger Alexander Grijalva-Moreno (16:31).  South Pasadena had all five scorers in the top 8 to win the team title with 24 points, followed by La Canada with 55, Monrovia with 74, Temple City with 92, San Marino with 139, and Blair with 176.

In the Girls Varsity race, La Canada’s outstanding frosh Kayley Bond blazed through the course in 18:06 to win.  She was followed by teammate Katie Scoville who came back from season-long injury to run an impressive 18:26.  Lady Titan Olivia Ruiz was close behind at 18:27.  La Canada’s Sarah Auther (18:48) and Monrovia’s Alayna Peters (18:50) rounded out the top five.  Peters earned a spot at CIF as an individual.  Matching the South Pas boys, La Canada’s girls placed all five scorers in the top 8 to win the team title at 21 points.  South Pas was second with 64, San Marino third with 77, Monrovia next with 91, followed by Temple City (112) and Blair (180).

Rio Hondo League Meet #2
October 11, 2017 @ Crescenta Valley Park

Rio Hondo met at Crescenta Valley Park for the second league meet.  The team results were very similar to League Meet 1, with South Pasadena taking four of five divisions.  The JV Boys were the first race off and the Tigers improved on their League 1 dominance by taking the first five spots for a perfect 15 point team score.  La Canada improved to take second place with 50 points.  South Pas’ Michael Xiong won in (17:44), followed by teammates Jay Ebata (18:16), Francisco Fortunelli (18:29), Miles Mendoza (18:42), and Jacob Wielenga (18:50).

The JV Girls were next, and the Lady Tigers took the first 3 places and won with 23 points.  Temple City took second with 52 points.  Caroline Liu of South Pas again won the division with a 22:40 performance, followed by teammates Quyen Ballagh (22:50) and Amelia Jarolim (22:57).  La Canada’s Simone Badaruddin (23:05) and Makenna Burnham (23:15) rounded out the top five places.

In the Varsity Boys race, the Tigers again took the top three spots and won with 23 points.  La Canada’s guys also improved over their League 1 result to take second with 60 points.  Tiger Oliver Chang led the South Pas trio with a winning time of 16:25, followed by Sam Clark (17:01) and Kai Dettman (17:02).  Following the Tigers were La Canada’s Owen Serricchio (17:04) and Ryan Van Slooten (17:06).

In the Varsity Girls race, La Canada took four of the top five spots in winning with 24 points over South Pas’ 59.  The Spartans were again led by standout freshman Kayley Bond’s 18:34, who had a sizable gap over second place teammate Sarah Auther at 19:37.  The next three finishers were San Marino’s Olivia Ruiz (19:38), followed by La Canada teammates Katherine Scoville (19:57) and Ellaney Matarese (20:04).

In the final race of the day, Monrovia’s Travis Morrison broke up the Tiger/Spartan hold on individual wins by taking first place in 18:35 over South Pasadena’s Ian Wang four seconds behind (18:39).  The next three spots were held by South Pasadena’s Nick Owens (18:57), San Marino’s Jonathan Karkafi (19:06), and Tiger Alexander Parra (19:07).  South Pasadena took the team title with all five scorers in the top 8 for a team score of 24.  La Canada improved to take second with 69.

Rio Hondo League Meet #1
September 21, 2017 @ Lacy Park

The first League competition of the 2018 XC season was held at Lacy Park.  The trend established over the previous season, with South Pasadena dominating every division except the Varsity Girls, continued into 2018.  The JV Boys were the first race off and the Tigers took the first 3 places and finished with a winning team score of 30 points over Temple City’s 49.  South Pas’ Jay Ebata won in 17:40 followed by Miles Mendoza (18:03), and Jacob Wielenga (18:04).  Rounding out the top 5 were La Canada’s Lucas Echternacht (18:06) and Temple City’s Adam Berry (18:12).

The JV Girls were next, and the Lady Tigers took the first 5 places for a perfect 15 team score.  Temple City took six of the next seven spots and took 2nd as a team with 44 points.  The race was won by Caroline Liu in 21:22, followed by teammates Quyen Ballagh (22:14), Kate Lee (22:23), Amelia Jarolim (22:48), and Caroline Liebe (22:54).

In the Varsity Boys race, Tiger Oliver Chang led South Pas to a team win with a 16:13 first place effort.  The Tigers had all 5 scorers in the top 10 for a team score of 29 points over 2nd place Temple City’s 60 points.  Following Chang in the top 5 places were La Canada’s Owen Serricchio (16:30), Temple City’s Alex Ortega (16:31), and South Pas teammates Kai Dettman (16:31) and Sam Clark (16:36).

In the Varsity Girls race, La Canada broke the Tiger stranglehold on team wins, finishing with a winning 26 points over South Pas’ 73.  The Lady Spartans had all five scorers in the top 11 spots, led by standout freshman Kayley Bond’s 18:20 first place finish.  The next four finishers were San Marino’s Olivia Ruiz (18:26), La Canada teammates Adena Dipaolo (18:38) and Sarah Auther (18:39), and Monrovia’s Alayna Peters (18:50).

In the final race of the day, South Pasadena again grabbed the top 3 places to win the team compeition with 25 points over Temple City’s 59.  Sophomore Ian Wang won in 17:37, followed by teammates Nick Owens (17:42) and Nicolas Kalaw (18:07).  La Canada freshman Christian Cabello was 4th in 18:15, and Monrovia’s Travis Morrison was 5th in 18:18.
