The first League competition of the 2018 XC season was held at Lacy Park. The trend established over the previous season, with South Pasadena dominating every division except the Varsity Girls, continued into 2018. The JV Boys were the first race off and the Tigers took the first 3 places and finished with a winning team score of 30 points over Temple City’s 49. South Pas’ Jay Ebata won in 17:40 followed by Miles Mendoza (18:03), and Jacob Wielenga (18:04). Rounding out the top 5 were La Canada’s Lucas Echternacht (18:06) and Temple City’s Adam Berry (18:12).
The JV Girls were next, and the Lady Tigers took the first 5 places for a perfect 15 team score. Temple City took six of the next seven spots and took 2nd as a team with 44 points. The race was won by Caroline Liu in 21:22, followed by teammates Quyen Ballagh (22:14), Kate Lee (22:23), Amelia Jarolim (22:48), and Caroline Liebe (22:54).
In the Varsity Boys race, Tiger Oliver Chang led South Pas to a team win with a 16:13 first place effort. The Tigers had all 5 scorers in the top 10 for a team score of 29 points over 2nd place Temple City’s 60 points. Following Chang in the top 5 places were La Canada’s Owen Serricchio (16:30), Temple City’s Alex Ortega (16:31), and South Pas teammates Kai Dettman (16:31) and Sam Clark (16:36).
In the Varsity Girls race, La Canada broke the Tiger stranglehold on team wins, finishing with a winning 26 points over South Pas’ 73. The Lady Spartans had all five scorers in the top 11 spots, led by standout freshman Kayley Bond’s 18:20 first place finish. The next four finishers were San Marino’s Olivia Ruiz (18:26), La Canada teammates Adena Dipaolo (18:38) and Sarah Auther (18:39), and Monrovia’s Alayna Peters (18:50).
In the final race of the day, South Pasadena again grabbed the top 3 places to win the team compeition with 25 points over Temple City’s 59. Sophomore Ian Wang won in 17:37, followed by teammates Nick Owens (17:42) and Nicolas Kalaw (18:07). La Canada freshman Christian Cabello was 4th in 18:15, and Monrovia’s Travis Morrison was 5th in 18:18.
